Notes on our supposed progress

You Should Know About “Hit Parade”

A lot of weeks on Fridays, my oldest friend Rocky and I send each other new music recommendations. We’re total geeks. We spend the year compiling lists of songs and albums (this is my 13th year methodically tracking my sonic loves), and, after Thanksgiving has come and gone, we begin the all important work of building our year-end lists: Albums and Songs of the Year.

Again: we’re giant music nerds. Rocky even has socks to prove it.

I think we could be best friends with Chris Molanphy, the host of my absolute favorite podcast: Hit Parade.

Every month, Chris tells the story of some aspect of popular music. Whether it’s the groundbreaking influence of P!nk, how Mariah Carey FINALLY got a #1 Christmas single after 25 years, or (my personal favorite episode) how Billy Joel seems to be everything to everybody, Molanphy brings a level of scholarship to a topic that absolutely, 100% does not deserve it.

And that’s why I love it.
