When I was in college, I did what collage kids do: I relished the weird and reveled in the obscure. I came from a rural town on the outskirts of Kansas City, and – while not completely cut off – didn’t have a lot of exposure to the off beat stuff.
I was exposed to a lot of things my Freshman Year, and one of those oddities was the cult sci-fi movie Plan 9 From Outer Space. I learned about it because of the Johnny Depp movie, Ed Wood, about Plan 9’s director.
Plan 9 has been almost universally regarded as the worst movie ever made (That is, until The Room. What is that thing?). But what makes it amazing is it was funded by a Baptist church who thought they were getting a religious film to their name.
Wood and crew underwent full immersion baptisms in order to receive $600,000 in 1958 money. That’s almost half a million today!
Again, Plan 9 is awful, but it’s also amazing.
You should take some time to watch it.
You’ll thank me. OR will you?
