Lauren Mayberry is the lead singer of the Scottish synth-pop band CHVRCHES. I’ve been a fan for about a decade. Their 2021 album Screen Violence was a standout for me, and I’ve been itching for new tunes.
Now I get one, but it’s not what I was expecting. Lauren has released a solo track.
“Are you Awake?” is a deft piano ballad about loss and regret. It’s “sweet” in the best way possible. There’s love and pathos to it. It’s not saccharine. It’s honest.
