I am a Bible nerd. It’s a professional hazard, but it is what it is. I make no apologies for it.
By no means would I call myself a “biblical scholar.” Those who hold that title are worthy of everyone’s undying respect, admiration, and thanks. I wish I had the time and energy to do what they do, but I don’t. I am glad to take their work and apply it to my own (I’m a preacher and teach by disposition), but the opportunity to delve into the deep, dark, whispered crevices of the holy scriptures is a luxury and joy I will never have access to.
And that is precisely why I appreciate those who take the time to do that work. They make the rest of us smarter.
Matt Helms and Rocky Supinger would be horrified, I think, if they knew I was placing them on the same level as those august Biblical Scholars, but I value the work they do almost as much as the commentaries I read during sermon preparation. As the hosts of The Bible Top 10 Podcast, Matt and Rocky give all us Bible Nerds a chance to nerd out every two weeks as they thematically survey different aspects of the Bible.
The podcast is just back for it’s latest season and will run every two weeks until the end of the year, and it couldn’t have arrived sooner. It’s been a long summer without their voices in my earbuds. The season opener was about the “Top 10 Biblical Movie Adaptations.” Some you know are on their list and some you probably don’t know are on it as well.
Matt and Rocky are each nerdy in their own way. I’ve known Rocky approaching 30 years and his puns NEVER get old. Pair that with his razor sharp literary mind and you’ve got the makings of some top notch biblical analysis.
I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Matt in person, but I’m prone to like him. For starters, we both love the book of Jonah, but (more importantly) he has an ability to drill down in to the details of atopic or text and un earth things that make all the difference.
