“Consider the source,” they say.
We’re told we don’t have to listen if what we hear is rude or mean or overly critical. We’re told we can dismiss a message if the messenger is not on the up and up, if they have an ulterior motive, if they would profit – in any way – from a change in our life.
But what if we are told something extremely hard yet extremely true? What if we’re made aware of a fatal flaw in our reasoning or worldview? What if we have been self-deluded and, as a result, self-destructive and someone calls us to account?
Do we dismiss that person?
No. We don’t.
Sometimes, when we don’t really want to hear what someone has to say, we ought to consider the source and then listen.
