Notes on our supposed progress

Ants Marching

It is estimated there are 1 Million ants on Earth for every 1 person alive.

I like to drop this fact when I point out that the more complex something is, the less of it there is.

Conversely, the simpler something is, the more of it there is.

Now, simple and complex is not analogous to bad and good, but it’s hard to not draw a line that way. I actually think simplicity is a trait to be admired and cultivated.

But “simplistic”? Naw. That’s not a good look.

Simple appreciates nuance. Simplistic is watered down.

Simple is clear and concise. Simplistic is unconsidered and incomplete.

Simple is a choice. Simplistic is a reaction.

The best bite of food I’ve ever had in my life was a preparation of rabbit loin in a reduction sauce. It was the simplest thing in the world, but it was so complex in it’s flavors and you can only get it in one restaurant in Brooklyn.

You can buy a pop-tart anywhere.

See what I mean?
