Notes on our supposed progress

Go with the Flow

From BoingBoing:

In 1990, University of Chicago psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi crystallized the concept of flow, which he defined as the mental state “in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.” Ever since, his book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience has been helping people tune in to their own creativity, improve performance, and cultivate joy. The following TED-Ed video is a quick primer on the flow state and how to “find it in our daily lives”:

Actually the performance of surgery can involve a state of flow. Certainly, many athletes, musicians, other professionals must experience the affect and effects of The Fl ow. I admit my ignorance of the fact of the existence of The Flow theory. Personally, I could feel the presence of a spiritual energy from within when immersed in a difficult surgical situation. Time , fatigue, physical activity became a blur while “the Flow “ occurred. As I progressed as a physician I began to realize the access of this state of mind and performance was a gift / blessing I did not deserve.
I realized it was the blessing given to me that I did not earn. My responsibility was to be thankful for the blessing. Remembering my responsibility was to use the blessing but not take credit for the blessing. Your comments certainly came to me as revelation of the physical/spiritual nature of The Flow. Thank you!
